Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions will it take to remove my tattoo?
The number of sessions required to remove a tattoo depends on a number of factors including tattoo ink color and density, age of the tattoo, size of the tattoo, and location on the body. Your specialist will let you know the estimated number of sessions for removal at your free consultation. To see complete removal, we have found that most tattoos take 3-7 sessions.
Certain pigments are easier to remove. Florescent colors are the least responsive to treatment. The type of ink may also affect the results since some inks create a paradoxical reaction causing the skin to become darker instead of lighter. Your specialist will advise you on what to expect based on your particular tattoo.

How far apart are the sessions?
Sessions are usually scheduled 6-8 weeks apart.
What will my skin look like after a session?
Your skin will be red and feel like it has mild sunburn. There may also be some bruising. With certain colors, such as red, there may be mild blistering that usually heals in about a week. The sunburn feeling typically goes away after a couple of hours, but your skin does need time to heal in between treatments. After each treatment you will be given detailed instructions on how to care for your treated area.

Does laser tattoo removal leave scars?
The Spectra Laser by Lutronic we use leaves virtually no scars. People with scarring disorders such as keloids may have an increased risk of forming a scar. To reduce the risk, follow all of our instructions carefully – both before and after sessions.
Does laser tattoo removal hurt?
Clients often say that the feeling can be compared to a rubber band snapping on your skin. We have perfected a unique numbing technique that is applied directly on the tattoo to help to prepare the area before, during, and after each session. You will still feel the laser on your skin when your tattoo is being removed. With our experience and training, our goal is to do everything possible to keep you comfortable and minimize any discomfort throughout the session.

How soon can I exercise after tattoo removal?
It depends on the size of the tattoo and the placement on your body. Typically we will recommend that you take 24 hours off from your exercise routine. After that you should be able to go back to your normal routine.
How soon can I go swimming after tattoo removal?
We recommend that you stay of pools, lakes, rivers, etc. for the first 24 hours after a laser treatment.
How soon can I get a tattoo over the tattoo I’m having removed?
You will want to wait until the previously tattooed skin has completely healed – typically six weeks after your last removal session.
Does the PicoSure Laser have faster results than other lasers?
At first blush you might think that a laser that fires light faster has the ability to remove a tattoo faster or better, but there is no long term, wide spread, peer reviewed clinical evidence of this theory. As we approach 300,000 treatments performed, we are dedicated to making sure our clinics feature the best technology for tattoo removal.
The PicoSure may be a good device to remove green ink pigment, but it is not the only laser that removes green ink tattoos (other Alexandrite lasers are also a good choice for green ink tattoos as well as Ruby lasers, in many cases).
Laser light enters the skin extremely quickly with the use of both these technologies and regardless of the speed, all tattoos take multiple treatments to be removed. Every year, new lasers enter the market and only occasionally do they make a measurable difference in treatment outcomes. The most important factor to consider when weighing laser tattoo removal options is the quality and experience of the clinical team, the customer service and the medical credentials of the clinicians performing the procedure.
Just like anything in life, experience, specialization and providing realistic expectations are the best predictors of satisfaction when it comes to evaluating your tattoo removal provider options. Rest assured that if and when a material improvement become available in the laser world, MEDermis Laser Clinic – The Tattoo Removal Specialists™ will be at the forefront of that charge.
