Signs Your Tattoo May Be Infected
Minor inflammation and small reactions aren’t uncommon when getting a tattoo, but at a certain point, some symptoms should cause concern. While it’s always best to seek the advice of a medical professional, here are a few red flags to keep an eye out for.
- a fever
- rash, redness, or bumps in the tattoo area
- abnormal swelling
- increasing pain
- shaking, chills, and sweats
The infection itself may arise from various factors such as bacteria, viruses, contaminated ink, unhygienic practices in the tattoo studio, or even an unknown allergy.
If you recognize any of the above issues, don’t worry. Treatment is possible under the guidance of a doctor. Depending on the severity of your infection your doctor may prescribe OTC medications, topical creams, or antihistamine medication.
To avoid the risk of infection be sure you follow all aftercare instructions strictly. A few of the most important things to focus on are keeping the newly inked area clean and covered with sterile gauze, and avoiding any irritants.
