What Is the Best Tattoo Removal Technology Available Today?

We’ve written before about the different types of tattoo removal methods, and if you’ve kept up with our posts then you probably know that laser tattoo removal is the most effective and safest method. Although lasers are the best tattoo removal technology available, there are various types. Here’s what you need to know about choosing the safest and most efficient tattoo removal technology for your tattoo removal.

When it comes to any treatment on your skin, especially one that involves a laser, you must do your due diligence. Researching the type of laser technology as well as the experience level of the technician and clinic will be important to ensure the success of the removal and your safety.

The Best Tattoo Removal Technology

Tattoo removal is nearly as old as tattoos themselves and the methods of removal have evolved over the years. Ranging from primitive forms of dermabrasion to excision and more modern attempts using a laser starting as early as the 1960s. In our more than 10 years in business, we’ve certainly seen our fair share of tattoo removal technology and techniques.

You can learn more about different removal methods by looking through one of our earlier articles. However, today we will solely focus on laser technology for tattoo removal.

As we mentioned above, the earliest attempt at laser removal that we know of came in the 1960s from Leon Goldman. He developed a laser that used hot vapor bursts that left the skin charred. A few decades later, Rox Anderson developed an alternative laser that removed tattoos but left a scar. While it would get rid of ink it could take up to two years. Thankfully, laser technology has made huge advances in recent years that allow us to remove unwanted ink without damaging the skin.

MEDermis Laser Clinic Uses Only the Best: Spectra Pico Plus Laser System by Lutronic

Before getting into the specifics, we want to note that there are many “tattoo removal lasers” that can be found online; these are not FDA-approved and should never be handled by anyone that is not a certified laser technician. The improper use of lasers could lead to lasting and harmful effects.

Our team of trained and certified laser technicians uses the Spectra Pico Plus Laser System by Lutronic: an “Nd: YAG Q-switched laser.” What does this mean? These are lasers used worldwide thanks to their unmatched ability to target pigment in the skin. Q-switch lasers have been used the longest and are the most known for laser tattoo removal.

The laser utilized at MEDermis Laser Clinic in both Austin and San Antonio is the Spectra Pico laser tattoo removal machine which delivers light at incredibly high energy for a tiny fraction of a second onto the skin. This shatters large tattoo pigments, which are then removed over time by your body’s natural healing processes. Light and heat from Spectra’s wavelengths are only absorbed into the target areas, minimizing damage to the tissue surrounding the unwanted tattoo ink.

Tattoo removal treatments are more efficient and less damaging to the skin. One cool function of this laser that we love is that it has four different wavelengths giving us more control to target specific areas while controlling the intensity level of the beam.

Now that you have an understanding of laser technology, there are still a few things you’ll want to keep in mind:

  • The number of treatments needed will depend on the ink used in your tattoo, the color of the ink, and other factors such as size and placement of the tattoo.
  • While the laser is completely safe, there still may be some discomfort. Our team mitigates this by applying a topical numbing solution prior to treatment.
  • Proper aftercare must be followed to avoid any complications or infections. Your Certified Laser Specialist will go over these rules with you during your consultation.
