What It’s Like to Get a Tattoo Removed with MEDermis

At MEDermis Laser Clinic we strive to give our clients as much information as possible so that they feel confident and comfortable when using our services, but we understand that sometimes there’s nothing better than getting feedback from someone who has actually gone through the process themselves.

Today, we want to highlight some of our previous client’s experiences so that you can get a better idea of what to expect from our team at the leading laser tattoo removal centers in Texas.

If you need a refresher on tattoo removal and why laser is a preferred method take a minute to read our blog post about it. If you already know laser removal is what you’re looking for, read on!

The Truth About MEDermis Laser Tattoo Removal

If you’ve taken a look at anything we’ve written, then you’re likely familiar with what to expect as well as that every person can have a different experience. There are a few characteristics that can affect how your tattoo removal and healing process will go, like:

  • Skin tone
  • Quality of tattoo ink
  • Color of the ink used
  • Location of the tattoo

Today we’re able to offer up the experience of two clients, one with a colored tattoo and the other with only black ink. We hope this insight will be helpful as you ponder your own tattoo removal!

First-Hand Experience Removing a Tattoo with Red Ink

We’ll start with Elisabeth’s process as she had a more elaborate tattoo to work with. Elisabeth visited our San Antonio location for her laser treatment, and she runs a great blog where she detailed her entire tattoo removal experience with us!

Here are some of the most important takeaways from Elisabeth’s blog about her laser tattoo removal experience. Elisabeth, who works in healthcare, was looking to erase her self-proclaimed “meaningless, flower tramp stamp tattoo” that she got in her teens.

Elisabeth says she prepared herself for some pain and discomfort but was still surprised by the intensity during her first treatment. She noted that the MEDermis staff was “amazing and gave a pep talk about what to expect before they ever turned on the laser.”

So, what is the pain like exactly? Elisabeth says “The pain is pretty intense–I’m not going to lie. However, it is temporary. My tramp stamp is pretty small, so the sessions are short. I can grit my teeth through it. The healing process is the interesting part and can vary depending on the size, age, quality and color of your tattoo.”

She’s completely right about the healing process! And thankfully there are some simple and straightforward steps to maintaining comfort while going through your own laser tattoo removal process, for example:

  • Using aftercare ointment
  • Wearing loose, cotton clothing
  • Cold compresses
  • Over the counter pain relievers
  • Low waisted pants (if your tattoo placement is similar to Elisabeth’s)

Our Certified Licensed Laser Technicians will go through all the necessary steps and tips for post-treatment care during your appointment to ensure you have a safe and comfortable recovery.

What’s the healing like? Elisabeth said it best when she likened the post-treatment healing process to a nasty sunburn and mentions that her skin felt tender and even blistered after laser treatment. While it may sound scary, it is “relatively common to experience redness, blistering, swelling, scabbing, itching and small amounts of bleeding for a few days up to a few weeks following each laser session.”

Again, our Certified Laser Technicians will lead you every step of the way! After appointments, your specialist will bandage you up and give you “strict orders not to remove it for 8-12 hours.” If you have a tattoo in a similar location to Elisabeth, she recommends “soft cotton t-shirts or tank tops during the healing process” and to keep the area clean, dry, and open to air after removing your first bandage. She also mentions that “you don’t want anything scratchy or textured rubbing your freshly lasered skin” and we agree! Don’t be alarmed if the blisters pop, but be sure that you wear clothes that can be “easily thrown in the wash.”

Elisabeth closes her blog speaking to the importance of a reputable tattoo removal specialist due to the risks and possibility of scarring and burning when having a tattoo removed with a laser. We appreciate Elisabeth’s openness and recommendation of our San Antonio team who she called “professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and everything you could ask of the people who are going to shoot you with a laser for months on end.”

First-Hand Experience Removing a Tattoo with Black Ink

For those who are considering laser removal of tattoos with black ink, we spoke to one former client, Kyle, who visited our Austin location for his tattoo removal. Here’s what Kyle had to say about his experience!

Before getting started here are some specs on Kyle’s tattoo: a 3.5” x 3.5” all black tattoo in the upper middle part of the back. Initially, Kyle opted for laser removal for two reasons. He got his original tattoo when he was 18 and felt that it was low quality and had faded in the 10 years since he got it, but he was also looking to make room for a larger tattoo, a full sleeve.

Kyle was very pleased with his treatments at MEDermis noting that sessions were quick and he was in and out in 15 minutes!  When speaking about the actual procedures, he said the sessions with the laser weren’t very painful thanks to a numbing agent we use. He recalls the aftercare being more tricky partially due to blistering. However, we can recommend ointments and treatment tips to keep yourself comfortable and your skin safe after each session!

Kyle was so happy with his results that he would “definitely recommend MEDermis to a friend or family member” and noted that his laser specialist, Mo, was very friendly and helped him relax throughout the whole process. Kyle had five sessions with us, and only paid for four because of our guarantee, and saw his tattoo vanish completely within a year!

After his experience, he recommends waiting to do your laser tattoo removal in the Fall or Winter timeframe so that you don’t have to miss out on fun warm weather activities, like swimming.
