Do Your Tattoos Hurt Your Chances of Getting a Job?

According to a Salary.com survey, having visible tattoos likely has a negative effect on your chances of landing your dream job. From the article: “In a perfect world we would all be judged solely on the merit of our work. But if the 2,675 people we surveyed are any indication, there is a lot more going on when it comes to performance evaluations, raises, promotions, and making character assumptions about people based on their appearance.”

While more than three quarters of the respondents felt that visible tattoos hurt an applicant’s chances of being hired during a job interview, only 4% stated that they have been discriminated against in the workplace due to their tattoos. Perhaps unsurprisingly, younger people were considerably more accepting of tattoos in the workplace than older folks, with just 22% of 18-25 year old respondents stating that tattoos are inappropriate, while that percentage jumped to 63% for those 60 years and older.

As far as which part of the country thinks tattoos at work are inappropriate, West South Central (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana) ranked highest at a whopping 55%.
